On August of 2007, we started the Walk Again Campaign with the goals of raising $6000 to provide 15 wounded soldiers with above-knee prosthetic legs and running in the Army 10 miler for this cause. We are delighted to inform you that all four of us completed the Army 10 miler race on October 7th and most importantly wrapped up an extremely successful fundraiser.
The response to our call for donations was overwhelming and we met our initial goal 3 weeks prior to the race. Thereafter, we revised the goal to $8,888 to include all 22 soldiers housed at Ranaviru Sevena. We would like to thank all our friends and family who supported this cause in whatever way possible and in the end made a big difference in the lives of 22 soldiers who had sacrificed everything to protect our motherland.
Kanch Algama was in Sri Lanka for two weeks in September. She was able to present the first 5 legs and handover the money for the remaining 17 legs. She also got to meet with most of the soldiers, and hear about their lives before and after their injuries. The soldiers were very grateful to all of you for helping them get their lives back on track.
During her visit, she found out that there were 2 soldiers who had been injured so badly that they need prosthetic legs that extend all the way up to their hips. Ranaviru Sevena has not created these types of legs before so they were not sure how much these legs would cost. At the moment, the staff at Ranaviru Sevena is estimating the cost of these legs. Since we were able to accomplish our goal of providing 22 prosthetic legs to the rest of the soldiers with your support, the four of us have decided to contribute a combined donation of $2,000 to this cause so that these 2 soldiers who are not likely to be able to afford or receive any donations can walk again.
